Gloversville alumni sought for career mentor program
The Gloversville Enlarged School District is seeking assistance from alumni to create a career resource for high school students.
“Countless numbers of our students have graduated Gloversville High School and gone on to be leaders and innovators locally and beyond,” Superintendent Michael B. Vanyo said. “Our alumni can be a resource offering inspiration and advice to our current students as they explore college and career possibilities.”
The idea for the GHS "Glove to Glove" Career Exploration Program first began when the district was approached by GHS Class of 2013 valedictorian Rachel Brown-Weinstock. Now a student at Syracuse University, Brown-Weinstock volunteered to create the alumni database and mentor program as a way to give back to the school district and community.
Once established, the database will be used to share with students success stories from graduates working in various career fields. Alumni will also be able to volunteer to answer questions and discuss career paths with interested students via the program’s website www.glovetoglove.org, which will also feature career resources for students such as career interest quizzes.
“It is our aim that the program and its database will help GHS students discover careers that they never even knew existed. Witnessing the success of alumni who have been in their very positions, we hope that current students will truly believe themselves capable of pursuing their passions in the future,” Brown-Weinstock said.
The district is encouraging alumni to share their career experiences by filling out the GHS Career Connection questionnaire. Based on their answers to the questionnaire, alumni will be contacted with a formal invitation to participate in the program. Alumni information will not be shared, or publicly distributed, without expressed permission.
