Boulevard students collect coins to help hurricane victims

The jingle jangle of loose change falling into a barrel marked the end of a month-long coin drive at Boulevard Elementary School as students emptied containers filled with pennies, nickels, quarters and dimes they had collected over several weeks.

Dubbed Coins for a Cause, the fundraiser continued throughout the month of September as the entire school community, including students, parents and staff members, emptied their pockets and purses of spare change to help those impacted by hurricanes that devastated parts of Texas and Florida, and much of Puerto Rico.

The classroom collections will be donated to the American Red Cross to assist with recovery efforts in the areas affected by hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Principal Thomas Komp credits students with organizing the Coins for a Cause fundraiser.

"I am proud of our students for really taking the lead in this effort to help others,” he said. “At the same time, I thank our students, our families, teachers and staff at Boulevard for their generosity and their kindness.”
