Trails to Education Project- GMS Nature Trail detailed project description

The primary mission of this project is to provide an accessible and affordable opportunity to meet New York State Education standards of curriculum while bringing the classroom outdoors.

The nature trail is within walking distance of GMS & GHS and will eliminate field trip transportation costs which have always been outrageously prohibitive.

A secondary mission of this project is to bring the community together to raise awareness of the critical environmental issues that this community faces after the departure of the leather mills as our economic base. The nature trail will provide an opportunity to study, monitor and observe pristine NYS DEC and ACOE regulated wetlands. From the main observation platform, the functions of wetlands for groundwater recharge, flood control, wildlife habitat and natural succession can be taught with the greatest impact. The effects of our contaminated ground water and soils on our community’s health are widespread and longstanding. With increased awareness, it may be possible to promote a healthier community by changing the behavior and attitudes of our individual community members affecting a greater cumulative impact on our environment for our children’s future.

Mrs. George and Mrs. Wojeski co-advisors of the Gloversville Middle School Environmental Club received a $5,000 Grant from Lowe's Toolbox for Education Program to help fund the building of the observation platform, pavilion and 50 "education station" posts on the Nature Trail.
