During a recent visit to Boulevard Elementary School, children’s author Gary VanRiper spoke with students about his “Adirondack Kids” book series, how it started and what it has become. He also shared with the grades 3-5 students his beliefs on what it takes to be an author. VanRiper said the top 2 attributes that all authors must possess: “They read” and “they try.”

VanRiper is an award-winning journalist, photo-journalist and children’s book author. He co-authored the popular Adirondack Kids books with his son, Justin, and the VanRiper family established Adirondack Kids Press, Ltd. to launch the book series. When not writing books or hiking the Adirondack Mountains, Van Riper speaks to students in public and private schools and at libraries and conferences throughout New York state about the importance of reading and offers advice on how to begin writing.
