GMS students’ artwork wins community contest

Girls posing with their plaster glove art

The group of Gloversville Middle School students who participated in the “Year of the Glove” art competition have won first and second places in the Middle School category for their plaster hand sculptures.

Julianna Alvarez, Rebecca Towne, Abigail Seltzer and Abrianna Hayes worked after school with art teacher Teresia Davis on the project.

The students created the gloves by casting their own hands, building them up with plaster craft to look like gloves and then designed each glove with a different theme.

The artwork is on display at the Fulton-Montgomery Regional County Chamber of Commerce until June 28. The awards ceremony for the contest winners takes place June 7.

Fulton County is celebrating the “Year of the Glove” to commemorate the area’s tanning and glove-making heritage. Many events have been planned in conjunction with this year-long celebration.
