Gloversville students compete in Battle of the Books

The Gloversville Middle and High School Battle of the Books Teams competed on April 11 in The Battle of the Books competition at the New York State Museum in Albany.

The teams had been preparing the entire school year by reading books from a chosen list of 16-20 books and practicing in mini-battles. Each team chose four members to compete in Albany while the other members, coachesand parents cheered them on. During each of the 5-minute battles, the students were required to identify the title and the author of a quote read from one of the books by buzzing in with the correct answer before the opposing team.

The Gloversville teams competed against other North Region teams (Broadalbin-Perth, Fort Plain, and Canajoharie). The top two teams from the North Region went on to compete against the top two teams from the South Region.

The GMS team placed first in the North Region Battle and went on to the finals.

After the competition, author Jennifer Roy spoke to the students about her books “Yellow Star,” “Mindblind,” and “Playing Atari with Saddam Hussein.” She also shared how she navigates through the writing process.

The GMS team consisted of Vivienne Crandall, Abigail Seltzer, Brooke Padgett, Joy Kalac, Krizzia Santander and Torrie Rulison.

The GHS team consisted of Severin Ryan, Veronica Shults, Bella Marshall, Haley Hickok and Alissa Mangiaracina.
