Fulton County is celebrating the “Year of the Glove” to commemorate the area’s tanning and glove-making heritage. Many events have been planned in conjunction with this year-long celebration.

A handful of Gloversville Middle School students are participating in the art competition. Julianna Alvarez, Rebecca Towne, Abigail Seltzer and Abrianna Hayes worked after school with art teacher Teresia Davis for about a month on their works of art.

The students began by creating the gloves by casting their own hands, building them up with plaster craft to look like gloves and then designed each glove with a theme of their choice.

From May 1 through June 28, the Fulton-Montgomery Regional County Chamber of Commerce will showcase in the downtown rotunda gallery original artworks and literary essays by Fulton County middle and high school students participating in the “Hand in Glove” competition.

On June 7, the chamber will award prizes of $100, $50 and $25 in different categories.
