Project Backboard Design Winner Announced

There are wonderful things happening in downtown Gloversville.

[Gloversville, NY] Community members, in partnership with Fulton County Center for Regional Growth, the City of Gloversville and the nationally-recognized organization Project Backboard have been working hard the last few months on a plan to revitalize the basketball court at Elk Street Park with the goal to resurface the basketball court and redesign the community seating area.

At the end of the 2019 school year, five finalists were chosen from designs submitted by Gloversville High School art students. The greater Gloversville community was asked to vote on the final design of the Elk Street Park court throughout the month of October.

We are excited to announce the winning design!

An official unveiling ceremony will be conducted during half-time at the Gloversville High School Varsity Basketball game on Tuesday, December 3, 2019. The game starts at 7 p.m.

The winning design by Kaylin Lee, a Gloversville High School senior will be painted on the newly resurfaced court in the spring of 2020. In addition to Ms. Lee’s design, a commemorative banner will be installed honoring the memories of Shauna Beekman and Anthony “Ice” Coger. The banner was created by Kadin O’Shaughnessy and Dante Bouchard.

“The Gloversville School District is proud to partner with the CRG and the city on Project Backboard,” said David Halloran, Superintendent of Schools for the Gloversville Enlarged School District. “The selected design is excellent, as were the other choices. We look forward to seeing the conceptual designs become a reality and look forward to future partnerships to help reimagine our community.  Thank you to all who have worked so hard to make this happen.”

“Nothing is more beneficial to a community than enthusiasm for positive change,” said Gloversville Mayor, Vincent DeSantis. “This year we have partnered with the school district on a number of successful projects. Our students, teachers, and administrators have been great, and this is yet another success. They’re setting an example for all of us.”
